How to ride Beijing Metro with a foreign bank card

At supported gates, tap the same contactless overseas bank card when entering and leaving. Keep a backup option because card acceptance can still depend on the card and device.

Fastest option

Beijing states that the metro network supports tap-and-go payments from UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB and American Express. Look for the card sensor, use one card per traveler and use the same card at exit.

Useful backups

You can also buy a single ticket from an English-language machine or staffed counter, use an Alipay metro QR code, or buy a BEIJING PASS. Carry a small amount of RMB in case your preferred method fails.

Before the first ride

Enable overseas contactless payments with your card issuer, avoid switching cards mid-journey and keep your passport available when asking staff for help.
